1000 Journals is a film about people whose lives are touched by 1000 traveling journals. These blank journals were released into the world in the summer of 2000, by Someguy, a San Francisco based artist. Some people found a journal, or got it from a friend or stranger. Some signed up on the web and received it in the mail. Some wrote in them, others doodled, pasted in photographs, or added artworks. Some kept them. Some passed them on. There are no rules, and no one really monitors these journals and their movements. And yet, they are connecting tens of thousands of people worldwide, provoking and inspiring them.

1pm The Narrow Margin
Film noir’s most dyspeptic couple, Charles McGraw and Marie Windsor, trade bare-knuckled billingsgate on an action-packed train ride from Chicago to Los Angeles while ducking a team of syndicate hit men. Also starring Jacqueline White, Narrow Margin is perhaps the finest “B” movie ever made with McGraw’s most distinctive noir portrayal. Produced by Stanley Rubin and helmed by Richard Fleischer with wonderful noir palaver courtesy of screenwriter Earl Felton. The movie has a fascinating history-- RKO mogul Howard prevented its release for two years, nearly ruining it. Don’t miss this enduring classic on the big screen!

6pm & 9pm
The Valerie Project
Presented by Drag City, Arthur Magazine and Cinespia
The Valerie Project is a rarely-screened film from the Czech New Wave, presented with live music by some of the heroes of the new folk/psychedelic movement. Jaromil Jires' Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970) is a haunting, psychedelic vision which plunges the beautiful heroine Valerie into a phantasmagoric world of vampires, the dark arts and dreamy free love. At once terrifying and beautiful, this feast for the eyes is accompanied by a lush, orchestral and acid-charged new live score performed by a nine piece ensemble including members of Espers, Fursasa and Fern Knight. The sound goes off and the amps get cranked (do harps need amps?) Don't miss this rare opportunity to see The Valerie Project in LA on the last leg of their one-time-only West Coast tour with this gorgeous, newly struck 35mm print. Due to limited seating, advance tickets are recommended as these shows will sell out! Tickets - $15 Directed by Richard Fleischer, 1952, 71 min.

5:30 Who is Edgar Allen?
Who is Edgar Allen? is a grim look at the precariousness of identity which follows in the tradition of Persona and The Talented Mister Ripley-- a mystery that’s at once classically cinematic and psychologically incisive. Setting this uncanny tale of a student’s escalating obsessions in a shadowy and phantasmagoric Venice, Haneke emphasizes dark undercurrents of economic disparity and mental illness.
Directed by Michael Haneke, 1984, 83 min. Shown with...

7:30 The Castle
The Castle is a scathing take on bureaucratic entrapment, adapted faithfully from Franz Kafka’s unfinished novel. K, a land surveyor, is summoned to work to at the Castle and its surrounding village by a mysterious Count. When K arrives, he finds the hostile and incompetent villagers blocking his access to the castle at every step. Fans of the director’s experimental studieswill appreciate this impressive foray into surrealism; literary types consider Haneke’s spectral adaptation the most faithful to Kafka yet committed to film. A West Coast premiere of this rare print!
Directed by Michael Haneke, 1997, 123 min.

10:30 Ninja 3: The Domination
When Ninja 3: The Domination hit the screens, it was immediately hailed as a brave and important film, one of Hollywood's first to deal openly with the contemporary issue of ninja spirit possession. Okay, maybe it's not brave or important. But what do you expect from the director and star of the Breakin' series? Lucinda Dickey plays an aerobics instructor who is taken over by the ghost of a bloodthirsty ninja warrior. When she starts to take revenge against his murderers (apparently the entire Phoenix police department), another ninja badass, Sho Kosugi, must lock swords with our svelte heroine and exorcise the evil ninja demon. Ninja III boasts one of the greatest and most inexplicable opening sequences in all of martial-arts cinema, and Dickey looks good even when she's humiliating herself with a can of V8 juice—though the spandex doesn’t hurt. Another winner from Golan-Globus!
Directed by Sam Firstenberg, 1984, 92 min.
